Washington DC Wildlife Removal Tip of the Month: An analysis of inhumane glue traps for rats

Glue traps are also known as glue trays. These are pieces of plastic or cardboard that are coated with a very strong adhesive that is used to trap mice. Once a rat steps its foot on the adhesive, it is almost impossible for it to get off. However, the thing with glue traps is that they are an absolutely inhumane method of killing a rat. On top of that, rats are not the only animals that get trapped in glue traps. Instead, all kinds of small animals which includes squirrels, kittens, birds, and other insects get exposed to a slow and agonizing death.

Manufacturers of glue trap usually direct buyers to throw the animals away while trapped on it. This causes an animal to suffer for many days resulting in a very slow and painful death due to stress, dehydration, starvation, suffocation, or injury while trying to get themselves off.

A number of animals end up getting their noses or beaks glued on to the traps due to which they slowly suffocate to death, often taking hours.

It also causes a great deal of stress for a poor animal. For instance, many rats that are terrified after getting glued to scream for help as they try to get off. As a result of his, patches of their skin and fur often get ripped off resulting in painful injuries. On top of that, many animals also try to chew their limbs off in efforts of freeing themselves, which again results in painful injuries.

Often at times, animals rehabilitators and doctors receive cases of a range of poor animals such as squirrels and kittens getting glued on to the traps. Most of the poor animals that end up sticking to a glue trap die a very inhumane death.

Glue traps are not only dangerous to animals but are also very hazardous for human health. Due to stress, many animals that get glued on to these traps empty their bowels as a result of which handlers of these traps get exposed to hantavirus.

What should you do?
Well if you want to keep the rodents away from your house, simply eliminate the sources of food that are placed in the open instead of executing animals in inhumane ways. Make sure that there is no dry food kept in the open. On top of that, also do not forget to seal off containers.

You may also use cotton balls that are soaked in Ammonia. These little balls keep the rodents away because rodents such as mice and rats, in particular, hate the smell of Ammonia.

In case you find a poor animal stuck on a glue trap, gently pour some cooking oil or baby oil over the stuck parts and try to free the animal very gently. Make sure to avoid its eyes and mouth. If you are unable to do so, rush the animal immediately to your nearest veterinary doctor or animal rehabilitation center.
